Theme: All About Apples!

During the month of September we learned all about apples! Here are just a few of the activities I did with my three year old class...

I purchased two red, yellow, green and pink apples. When you ask a preschooler, "what color are apples?" The normal response is, "Red!" I wanted to show my  students that apples come in a variety of colors.

We talked about the different parts of an apple. 1. Skin 2. Stem 3. Flesh 4. Seeds

"From the seeds of an apple, a new apple tree will grow and make more apples!"

I gave the name of each apple as I placed it on the corresponding construction-paper color strip.

I cut one of each apple in half to show the students the "surprise" hidden in each apple: a Star!

"In the star is where the seeds hide."

Then it was time to taste the apples! Before tasting I asked each child to tell me which one they think they are going to like best. I handed them a paper apple in the corresponding color they said they thought they would like.

We tasted each apple one by one. We talke about how each apple tastes. I asked them if the apple tastes sour, sweet, or tangy?

After we tasted each apple, I asked them which apple  they liked best. I then gave them a paper apple in the color corresponding to their response. We looked to see if they ended up likeing the apple they had predicted at the beginning.

Investigation Station: I set out trays with an apple, seeds, a stem, and a magnifying glass. We sat together and talked about what we observed.

Here is my son looking at the Golden Delicious up close.

Apple Craft Acticity: after we finished tasting and investigating I had each child pick the apple they liked best and I gave them a strip of construction paper in the color corresponding to their response. They cut the construction paper strip and glued the cut pieces on a paper plate. When finished glueing, they adorned it with a stem and leaf.

Seasonal Tree: this tree in our class changes with the season. In September it had bright green leaves with the apples the students made.

Sensory Tub: Aa is for apple! I added red, yellow and green pom poms in three sizes (small, medium and large), foam apples, an apple strainer, and nesting bowls to group the apples by size and color.

Thank you for stopping by. Hope these activities inspire you to create and learn with and for your students. :)

Blessings,
Erica

January Week 4: Alphabet {letter Nn}

Letter of the week box: newspaper, note pad, ninja mask, numbers, noodles, nuts, necklace, letter N flash card

Letter Song {U Tube Video}: "Letter M", by Having Fun Teaching

We start by listening and watching the video of the song "Letter n," by Have Fun Teaching. E danced and jumped to the song and worked on saying the /n/ sound!

Then we go through the letter of the week box. We discuss each object. While pointing to the N flash card, I say, "Newspaper  starts with N  /n/ /n/ newspaper." I do this for each object.

Letter Worksheet: N is for newspaper

First, I have him trace the letter with his pointer finger on his worksheet.  He cut pieces of newspaper with his scissors. then, I model how to trace the letter N on a piece of paper with a marker. He then traces the letter on his worksheet with a marker and glues newspaper on N.

Sensory Tub:

Materials: black dyed rice (or you can use black beans too), tub or container, noodles, nuts, necklace, nickles (for stars) and a paper moon.

I first placed the noodles, nuts, necklace in the tub/container and then I poured the rice over the items to hide them. On top of the rice I placed the nickels and moon. I had him dig to find the hidden "n" word objects. It was like a treasure hunt!

After he found all the "n" objects we sorted them into groups and counted to see which group had the most and which had the least!

Letter Snack: noodles with marinara

January Week 3: Theme {sun and planets}

For the Month of January we are shooting for the stars!

We are making a space book. Here are pages 3 and 4 that will be included in the space book!

***please note: preschool licensing paperwork is in full swing! I am in the middle of all the paperwork that will be submitted for the preschool application! I am still doing preschool learning activities with my son, but please be patient with my postings! :) I will post as time allows and will, eventually, post all the activities we did! Also, I will not be as descriptive as I usually am. The postings will be more of a "Pictorial" of the activities, for now, until the application is finished. Thank you! :)******

Cut and paste. Made lines for guidance. He is 2.5 his hand muscles are just mastering the cutting motion. He went to town....he loves cutting! :)

For the planets he helped me dab dots of glue next to the numbers. We counted the planets as he glued them. And sang the song below.

Song: Planets Oribit
Author unknown
{Tune: "The ants go marching"}

Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars
hurrah, hurrah
(X2)

Jupiter and Saturn are next in line
Uranus, Neptune and Pluto make nine
And they all go spinning
around around they go

The planets orbit around the sun
 hurrah, hurrah
(X2)

The planets orbit around the sun
And on their axis one by one
And they all go spinning
Around around they go

Gross Motor Actiivity:

Place an object to represent the sun on the floor. As you sing the song above, pretend to be a planet going around the sun. During the last part when the planets spin on their orbit, spin in place as you go around the sun. :)
